A series of tornadoes which struck parts of the country yesterday has prompted experts to warn UK residents to check they have home insurance to cover any eventuality.
Farnborough, Luton and Nuneaton were all struck at some point during the day with local people describing the events as “like something out of the wizard of Oz”.
Concerns have been raised, however, that many victims will be left out of pocket - for while their home insurance may cover damage of the outside of their building, those with cheaper home contents insurance or car insurance may not have adequate cover.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) says that for the most part, those who have been affected by the unexpected weather should be given help but added that extra measures can be taken to make sure people are prepared.
It advises that victims get in touch with their insurer as soon as possible for advice on making a claim - adding that most insurance firms have emergency 24-hour helpline numbers.
Steps such as arranging for temporary repairs to stop damage getting worse are also recommended.
Nick Starling, ABI’’s director of general insurance, said: “While tornados in the UK are thankfully very rare, unexpected extreme weather incidents like this are exactly what insurance is here for.
“Insurers will be doing everything possible to help policyholders who have suffered damage, and will be dealing with all claims as quickly as they can.”
